About Dazhou

Dazhou is a large city in the northeast of Sichuan province and a significant center of the ancient Ba culture, which shaped this region over 3,000 years ago. The Ba were a warlike people known for their unique bronze weapons, boat burials, and shamanistic rituals — their traces can be found in numerous archaeological sites around Dazhou. The Bashan Grand Canyon (Bashan Da Xia Gu) is the scenic highlight of the region: a gorge over 100 kilometers long with cliffs up to 2,000 meters high, turquoise rivers, and subtropical forests. The canyon is one of the most spectacular gorge landscapes in southwestern China and offers hiking trails, glass bridges, and boat rides. Dazhou is one of the most important locations for natural gas extraction in China — the Puguang gas field is among the largest in the country. This industrial significance has brought economic growth to the city, while the surrounding area has largely remained untouched by mass tourism. The Fenghuang Mountain (Phoenix Mountain) north of the city features Daoist temples, viewing platforms, and hiking trails through forested mountains. The city itself surprises with vibrant night markets, authentic Sichuan cuisine, and the Dazhou Museum, which documents the Ba culture with impressive bronze finds.
