About Taizhou

Taizhou is a coastal city in Zhejiang province, south of Ningbo and east of Wenzhou, combining a rich Buddhist tradition with dramatic coastal landscapes and a vibrant fishing culture. The city is named after the Tiantai Mountains, which are considered the cradle of Tiantai Buddhism — one of the most influential schools of Chinese Buddhism. The Tiantai Mountain (Tiantai Shan) is a sacred Buddhist mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage candidate: The Guoqing Temple, founded in 598, is the ancestral monastery of the Tiantai school and has had a tremendous influence on Buddhism in Japan and Korea. The monastery complex, with its ancient trees, pagodas, and meditation halls, is a place of deep spirituality and historical significance. The Jiangnan Great Wall (Jiangnan Changcheng) in Linhai is a well-preserved city wall from the Jin Dynasty (4th century), stretching over 6 kilometers across hills and valleys. It is referred to as the "southern Great Wall" and offers spectacular panoramic views of the old town of Linhai with its canals and historic alleys. The coast of Taizhou features the Dongtou Islands archipelago and Yuhuan Island with steep cliffs, fishing villages, and seafood markets. The port of Taizhou is one of the most productive fishing ports in China — fresh fish, crabs, and squid come directly from the boat to the table.
