About Yancheng

Yancheng is located on the coast of Jiangsu Province and is home to one of China's most significant nature reserves: the Yancheng Wetlands, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019 as part of the "Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of the Yellow Sea – Bohai Gulf". These vast mudflats and salt marshes are an essential stopover on the East Asian-Australasian flyway. The Yancheng Rare Bird Nature Reserve is home to the largest population of Red-crowned Cranes (Manchurian Cranes) outside their breeding grounds. In winter, over 1,000 of these majestic birds gather here, regarded in Chinese culture as symbols of longevity and happiness. The observation platforms in the reserve offer breathtaking views of crane flocks against the backdrop of endless mudflat landscapes. The name Yancheng means "Salt City" — salt production on this coast has a history of over 2,000 years. The Salt Museum documents ancient salt production that once filled the imperial treasury. The salt fields along the coast stretch over thousands of hectares, creating a surreal landscape of white crystalline plains. The Dafeng Milu Reserve is home to the largest population of Pere David's Deer (Milu) in the world. This deer species, once extinct in China, has been reintroduced from European zoos and has thrived here — over 7,000 animals now live in the reserve, marking one of the most successful reintroduction stories in conservation history.
