About Yantai

Yantai is located on the northern coast of the Shandong Peninsula by the Yellow Sea and is China's most famous wine region. The port city, with its mild maritime climate and extensive sandy beaches, is nicknamed the City of Grapes and Wine. In the 19th century, Yantai, known as Chefoo, was a significant treaty port with European influence. The Penglai Pavilion, 65 km west of Yantai, is one of the four famous pavilion structures in China and the setting for the legend of the Eight Immortals, who sailed over the sea from here. Under special weather conditions, mirages appear over the sea — a phenomenon that inspired the legend of the Island of the Immortals. The Changyu Pioneer Wine Company, founded in 1892, is China's oldest and most famous winery. The underground cellar vault and the wine culture museum offer tours and tastings of Chinese wines that have won international awards. Yantai's coast features kilometers of sandy beaches: Golden Beach (Jinsha Tan) and Yantai Beach are popular summer bathing destinations. The island of Yangma Dao off the coast impresses with cliffs, temples, and fresh seafood. Yantai Hill Park in the city center, established during the colonial period, offers a panoramic view of the bay and houses historical consulate buildings from the treaty port era. The blend of Chinese tradition and European colonial heritage makes Yantai architecturally unique.
