About Zunyi

Zunyi in the southwestern Chinese province of Guizhou is a city of great historical significance and also the home of China's most famous liquor — Maotai. The city is nestled in a dramatic karst landscape with deep gorges, waterfalls, and subtropical forests. The Zunyi Conference of 1935 was a turning point in Chinese history: During the Long March of the Red Army, Mao Zedong took military leadership of the Communist Party here. The conference building (Zunyi Huiyi Huizhi) is now a national museum and one of China's most important revolutionary memorials. The town of Maotai (Maotai Zhen), about 120 km west, is home to the eponymous Baijiu — the most expensive and prestigious liquor in China. Maotai liquor is served at state banquets, and a bottle can cost thousands of euros. The distillery can be visited, and the National Baijiu Museum explains the centuries-old distillation art. The Chishui Waterfalls near the border with Sichuan are among the most spectacular natural spectacles of Guizhou: The Chishui Dashapu Waterfall is 76 meters high and 80 meters wide, surrounded by ancient tree ferns (Alsophila spinulosa), which are considered living fossils and are under strict nature protection. The region around Zunyi is part of the Danxia landscape belt: Red sandstone cliffs with bizarre formations, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage, shape the landscape around the Chishui River.
