About Peshawar

Peshawar is one of the oldest cities in South Asia and the gateway to the legendary Khyber Pass — a crossroads of civilizations for over 2,000 years at the intersection of Central Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East. The capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was the capital of the Kushan Empire and a center of Gandhara culture, which fused Greek and Buddhist art. The Peshawar Museum houses one of the world's most significant collections of Gandhara art: Greek-Buddhist sculptures that emerged after the campaign of Alexander the Great — Buddha figures with Greek facial features. The Bala Hisar Fort, a powerful fortress on a hill, has overlooked the city since the Mughal era. The old town is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, bazaars, and caravanserais: the Qissa Khwani Bazaar (Bazaar of Storytellers) was once the most famous market on the Silk Road. Here, the air is filled with the scent of spices, cardamom tea, and freshly baked naan. Pashtun hospitality is legendary — strangers are treated as honored guests. The Mahabat Khan Mosque from the Mughal era, with its intricate frescoes, and the historical havelis (merchant palaces) testify to Peshawar's wealth as a trading city on the Silk Road.
