About Unawatuna

Unawatuna is Sri Lanka's most famous beach destination – a perfectly curved bay protected by a natural coral barrier, offering calm, warm water ideal for swimming. The palm-fringed bay is located just five kilometers south of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Galle, combining beach vacation with culture in a compact area. Once listed as one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, Unawatuna has retained its charm despite increasing development: The water shimmers turquoise, the waves are gentle, and at the western end of the beach, the jungle begins. The proximity to Galle's famous fort makes Unawatuna unique among Sri Lanka's beach destinations. The 17th-century Dutch Fort of Galle is one of the best-preserved colonial fortresses in Asia, featuring atmospheric alleys, boutiques, cafes, and the iconic lighthouse on the fortress wall. You can swim at the beach in the morning, stroll through Galle Fort at noon, and watch the sunset at the Japanese Peace Pagoda above Unawatuna in the evening – all without a car. Unawatuna is livelier and more touristy than most other places on the south coast, which has its pros and cons: The restaurant selection is excellent with international and Sri Lankan cuisine, there are surf schools, dive shops, and yoga studios, but it can get crowded during peak season. Jungle Beach, a hidden small bay behind Rumassala Hill, offers a quiet alternative with excellent snorkeling. The hill itself is said to be a piece of the Himalayas carried here by the monkey god Hanuman – the temple at the summit tells the story. Unawatuna can be reached from Colombo Airport in about three hours by train or car.
