About Kutaissi

Kutaissi is Georgia's second-largest city and the former capital of the ancient kingdom of Colchis — the land of the Golden Fleece. The city combines millennia-old history with a relaxed atmosphere and serves as the gateway to some of the most spectacular natural wonders of the Caucasus. The Bagrati Cathedral, a masterpiece of Georgian architecture from the 11th century, sits atop a hill overlooking the city and offers panoramic views of Kutaissi and the surrounding mountains. The Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site located 10 km outside the city, is considered one of the most significant medieval educational institutions of Christianity and impresses with Byzantine mosaics of breathtaking beauty. The Prometheus Cave, one of the largest stalactite caves in Europe, is just 20 km from the city and features underground lakes, colorful lighting, and even a boat ride. The Okatse Canyon with its hanging bridge and the Martvili Canyon with its emerald-green gorge are further natural highlights in the area. Kutaissi Airport is used by Wizz Air as a hub and offers cheap direct connections from many European cities — often for under €30 per trip.
