About Malta

Malta is a tiny island nation in the heart of the Mediterranean with a history that dates back 7,000 years — older than the pyramids. On just 316 km² (smaller than Munich), there is an incredible density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, honey-colored fortified cities, and turquoise bays. Valletta — the capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site — is the smallest capital in Europe and a single fortress: built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, it features magnificent Baroque churches, the impressive St. John's Co-Cathedral with Caravaggio's masterpiece, and the spectacular Grand Harbour. Mdina — the "Silent City" — is a medieval fortified city on a hill that served as a filming location for King's Landing (Game of Thrones). The narrow streets, honey-colored walls, and views over the entire island make it one of the most atmospheric places in the Mediterranean. The Blue Lagoon on the neighboring island of Comino offers the unreal turquoise waters that have made Malta famous. The Megalithic Temples — including Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra — are the oldest free-standing structures in humanity (3600 BC, older than Stonehenge).
