About Wolgograd
Wolgograd — formerly Stalingrad — is one of the most historically significant cities in the world. The Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943) was the turning point of World War II and continues to shape the city today. Wolgograd stretches over 80 kilometers along the western bank of the Volga and is a city of monuments, memorial sites, and the indestructible Russian spirit. The Mamayev Kurgan — "Motherland Calls!" — is the monumental memorial on the hill that changed hands during the battle and became a symbol of resistance. The 85-meter-high Motherland statue was the largest statue in the world at the time of its construction and remains one of the most impressive to this day. The Panorama Museum showcases a 360° painting of the battle over 2,000 square meters. The ruins of the Gerhardt Mill — a deliberately unrebuilt mill in the middle of the city — stand as a silent memorial to the destruction. Wolgograd is also the starting point for tours into the Volga Steppe and to Lake Elton — one of the saltiest lakes in the world, whose surface glimmers golden at sunset. The Volga promenade with the modern Dancing Bridge offers relaxation by the river in summer.
