About Saint John's
Saint John's is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda and the gateway to an island famous for its 365 beaches — one for every day of the year. The colorful harbor city on the northwest coast of Antigua welcomes cruise ships and sailors alike with Caribbean charm and British colonial heritage. St. John's Cathedral, an impressive Anglican cathedral with two baroque towers on a hill, has overlooked the city since 1845. Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay at the harbor offer duty-free shopping, restaurants, and the best architecture in the city — restored warehouses from the sugarcane era. Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour (UNESCO World Heritage Site), 30 minutes to the south, is the only functioning Georgian naval dockyard in the world: Here Admiral Nelson had his fleet serviced in the 18th century. Today it is a yacht harbor with restaurants, a museum, and the Shirley Heights Lookout, which hosts the best party in the Caribbean on Sundays — steel band, BBQ, and sunset. Antigua is a sailing paradise: The annual Antigua Sailing Week in April attracts sailors from around the world. The sheltered bays and consistent trade winds make the island one of the best sailing areas in the Caribbean.
