About Road Town
Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the center of one of the best sailing areas in the world. The modest town on the island of Tortola lies in a sheltered bay and serves as a starting point for charter yachts that cruise between the over 60 islands and cays of the archipelago. The town itself is small and manageable: The Main Street district with its colorful wooden houses, the Crafts Alive Market at the harbor, and the Old Government House Museum are the main attractions. But Road Town is primarily a springboard — to the legendary sailing areas, pristine beaches, and hidden coves of the BVI. The Baths on Virgin Gorda (accessible by ferry) are the natural wonder of the BVI: huge granite boulders form caves and natural pools on the beach, infused with light and turquoise water — a geological wonder and one of the most photographed motifs in the Caribbean. The rum culture is omnipresent: The Callwood Rum Distillery in Cane Garden Bay has been distilling rum in copper pot stills for over 300 years. The Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, accessible only by boat, is considered the birthplace of the Painkiller cocktail — one of the most legendary beach bars in the Caribbean.
