About Willemstad

Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, is one of the most colorful cities in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997. The iconic Handelskade with its pastel-colored Dutch colonial buildings at Sint-Annabaai is the quintessential postcard image of the Caribbean — Amsterdam in the tropics, with turquoise water instead of canals. The Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pedestrian bridge that swings open for passing ships — a unique spectacle. Punda on the east side is the historic center with the Mikve Israel-Emanül Synagogue (the oldest in the Western Hemisphere, founded in 1651) and the Floating Market, where Venezuelan vendors sell fresh fruit directly from their boats. Otrobanda on the west side is the more creative neighborhood with street art, the Kura Hulanda Museum (history of the slave trade), and lively restaurants. The Blue Curacao liqueur has been produced on the island since 1896 — the Landhuis Chobolobo distillery offers tours and tastings. Curaçao's diving and snorkeling spots are among the best in the Caribbean: the Curaçao Underwater Marine Park, the Mushroom Forest, and over 65 dive sites with intact coral reefs are just a few minutes from Willemstad.
