About Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands and one of the most visited cruise ports in the Caribbean. The city on the island of St. Thomas is picturesque, located on a deep bay surrounded by green hills, and offers a unique blend of Danish colonial architecture, Caribbean flair, and American comfort. The Danish past (the islands belonged to Denmark until 1917) shapes the old town: the 99 Steps, a steep staircase from the Danish era, lead to Blackbeard's Castle, a 17th-century watchtower with panoramic views. Fort Christian, the oldest building on the island (1672), houses a museum. The streets of the old town (Dronningens Gade, Norre Gade) still bear their Danish names. Charlotte Amalie is famous for duty-free shopping — as a U.S. territory, generous duty-free allowances apply for U.S. citizens, but European visitors also benefit from low prices on jewelry, watches, and spirits. The Havensight Cruise Ship Dock welcomes several cruise ships daily. Magens Bay Beach, 15 minutes to the north, is regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world: a perfect crescent-shaped beach with calm, turquoise water.
