About Socotra
Socotra is the most extraterrestrial place on Earth. This isolated island in the Indian Ocean, 350 kilometers off the coast of Yemen, has been separated from the mainland for over 20 million years — so long that evolution took its own paths here, resulting in a flora that exists nowhere else on the planet. Over a third of the plant species are endemic, earning Socotra the nickname "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean." The iconic landmark is the Dragon's Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) — a tree that looks as if designed by a science fiction illustrator: a thick trunk branches out into a perfect umbrella crown reminiscent of an inverted umbrella. The tree's red resin — the namesake "Dragon's Blood" — has been traded since ancient times as medicine, dye, and varnish. Entire forests of these surreal trees cover the island's high plateau, creating a landscape that exists in no other corner of the Earth. The Bottle Tree Desert (Adenium forests) presents another bizarre sight: bulbous, water-storing trunks bear tiny pink flowers on bare branches — trees that look like living sculptures. The Desert Rose (Adenium socotranum), the cucumber tree, and dozens of other endemic species turn every walk into a botanical adventure. But Socotra is not just about botany: the beaches are among the most pristine in the world. Qalansia Beach on the west coast stretches like a dazzling white crescent in front of turquoise waters, and the sand dunes of Stero rise like a miniature Sahara by the sea. The caves of Hoq contain stalactites and stalagmites of impressive dimensions, and deep-sea dives reveal an equally unique underwater world. The few thousand island inhabitants still largely live as fishermen and herders — tourism exists only in its infancy, making Socotra one of the last truly undiscovered travel destinations in the world.
