About Samoa
Samoa is the heart of Polynesia — an island nation made up of two main islands and eight smaller islands, which has preserved the most authentic Polynesian culture of the South Seas. While neighboring islands have opened up to mass tourism, Samoa lives by the Fa'a Samoa — the Samoan way of life, where family structures, village community, and hospitality dictate daily life. The To Sua Ocean Trench on the island of Upolu is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the Pacific: a 30-meter deep crater filled with crystal clear turquoise seawater, surrounded by tropical vegetation. A steep ladder leads down into this natural infinity pool, which is connected to the ocean through underground lava tubes. Swimming here feels like swimming in a giant jewel. Upolu offers natural water slides through volcanic rock at the Papaseea Sliding Rocks, while the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum (Villa Vailima) showcases the last home of the Treasure Island author, who died here in 1894 and was buried on Mount Väa. The Samoan tradition of Fia Fia — an evening of fire dance (Siva Afi), traditional dances, and an Umu earth oven feast — is an unforgettable experience. Savai'i, the larger and wilder sister island, is home to the Alofaaga Blowholes, where seawater shoots up to 20 meters into the air through lava tubes, the Dwarf Rainforest with its miniature volcanic cones, and the Pulemelei Mound — the largest ancient structure in Polynesia, a pyramid-shaped stone platform that still poses mysteries.

Insider knowledge that makes your holiday better.
Respect Fa'a Samoa — Sunday is sacred (few shops open). Always ask before photographing in villages. Cover shoulders and knees.
Beach Fales instead of hotels — traditional open huts on the beach from 30-50 €/night with meals. More authentic and cheaper than hotels.
To Sua early in the morning — access opens at 9 am (20 WST entrance). Almost empty before 10 am. Water shoes recommended for the ladder.
Savai'i by ferry — Lady Samoa III from Mulifanua to Salelologa (1 hour, approx. 12 WST). Car rental recommended on both islands.
Lava Fields on Savai'i — the eruption from 1905-1911 left huge lava fields. The Sale'aula Lava Church shows a church surrounded by lava flow that still stands.
