About Nuku'alofa

Nuku'alofa is the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga — the last Polynesian kingdom that was never colonized. The modest city on the island of Tongatapu is not a glamorous travel destination, but authentic Polynesia: a place where the whole country comes to a standstill on Sundays, the king actually rules, and the church dictates social life. The Royal Palace, a white Victorian wooden building by the water, is the official residence of the Tongan king — admired from the outside but not open to enter. The Talamahu Market is the heart of the city: tropical fruits, Tapa fabrics, handicrafts, and the aroma of Umu taro dishes. Tonga's greatest natural wonder is the humpback whales: From July to October, thousands of humpback whales migrate through the waters to raise their young. Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with humpback whales — an unforgettable experience. The blowholes on the southern coast shoot seawater up to 30 meters into the air. The Ha'amonga 'a Maui Trilithon, a 12-ton stone gate from the 13th century, is referred to as Tonga's Stonehenge and testifies to the high architectural skills of the ancient Tongans.
