About Barquisimeto

Barquisimeto is the fourth largest city in Venezuela and is affectionately called the "Music Capital" of the country. The capital of the Lara state is located in a valley at an altitude of 600 meters between the Andes and the Caribbean coast and enjoys a pleasant climate year-round — hence its nickname "Ciudad Crepuscular" (City of Twilight) due to its legendary sunsets. The city is the center of Venezuelan folk music and home to the Tamunangue — an Afro-Indigenous dance in honor of Saint Anthony, which is part of the intangible cultural heritage. Every January, the Divina Pastora takes place, one of the largest religious processions in Latin America with over two million participants. The Catedral de Barquisimeto — a bold concrete structure from the 1960s with an inverted umbrella design — is a landmark of modern Latin American architecture. The Obelisco de Barquisimeto overlooks the city from a hill, and the Museo de Barquisimeto in the historic center showcases the rich history of the region. The surrounding Lara region is known for its wine production and sugarcane fields. The nearby Quíbor valleys offer archaeological sites with pre-Columbian finds.
