When am I entitled to compensation for a delayed flight?

Under EU Regulation 261/2004 you are entitled to €250 to €600 per person if your flight arrives more than three hours late, is cancelled at short notice or you are denied boarding due to overbooking. There is no entitlement in extraordinary circumstances such as severe weather or air traffic control strikes.

How much compensation is due depending on flight distance?

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, compensation depends on the flight distance: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 for 1,500 to 3,500 km and €600 for more than 3,500 km.

When are you entitled to compensation?

You are entitled to compensation for an arrival delay of at least 3 hours, a cancellation notified less than 14 days in advance, denied boarding or a missed connection on a single booking, unless extraordinary circumstances applied.

Which flights are covered by EU 261?

All flights departing from the EU, and flights into the EU operated by an EU airline. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland also apply the rules.

How long do I have to make a claim?

Time limits depend on national law and differ between countries – in Germany, for example, it is three years from the end of the year of the flight. Keep your boarding pass, booking confirmation and proof of the delay.
