Nature & Environment

Albania boasts one of the most diverse landscapes in Europe — from the Adriatic and Ionian coasts to subtropical plains and alpine peaks reaching 2,700 meters. Additionally, it is home to Europe's last wild river, ancient forests, and an astonishing variety of species.

Landscape & National Parks

On an area smaller than Brandenburg, Albania combines an astonishing diversity of landscapes:

  • Adriatic Coast (North): Flat sandy beaches from Shëngjin to Vlora. Less spectacular than the Riviera but family-friendly.
  • Ionian Coast (Riviera): Steep cliffs, turquoise waters, hidden pebble beaches. One of the most beautiful coastal areas in the Mediterranean.
  • Albanian Alps (North): Limestone peaks up to 2,694 m (Maja e Jezercës), deep gorges, glacial lakes. Europe's last alpine wilderness.
  • Central Hill Country: Gentle hills with olive groves, orchards, and vineyards. Mediterranean rural life.
  • Vjosa Valley (South): Europe's last wild river winds through spectacular gorges — a national park since 2023.

National Parks

Albania has 15 national parks, collectively protecting around 7% of the country's area. The most important for travelers:

Wildlife

Albania's remote mountain regions are home to a wildlife exceptional for Europe: brown bears, wolves, lynxes, golden eagles, imperial eagles, and griffon vultures. In Lake Shkodra and the Karavasta Lagoon, pelicans (including the rare Dalmatian pelican), flamingos, and over 280 bird species can be found. On the coast: Mediterranean monk seals and sea turtles (Caretta caretta).
