Districts at a Glance
Amsterdam consists of a network of characterful districts, each with its own charm:
Centrum (Center)
For whom: First-time visitors, culture fans, night owls
The historic heart with the Dam, the canals, the Red Light District, the train station, and most of the attractions. Touristy but unavoidable — and beautiful.
Jordaan
For whom: Strollers, foodies, art lovers
Amsterdam's most charming district: narrow canals, hidden Hofjes (historic courtyards), vintage shops, galleries, and cozy cafés. The Anne Frank House is on the edge. Saturdays: Lindengracht Market.
De Pijp
For whom: Foodies, locals, market lovers
Amsterdam's most multicultural district with the famous Albert Cuyp Market, Surinamese, Turkish, and Moroccan eateries, hip bars, and the Heineken Experience Museum.
Amsterdam-Noord
For whom: Hipsters, club-goers, creatives
The former NDSM shipyards north of the IJ are Amsterdam's most creative district: street art, festivals, restaurants in industrial halls, the A'DAM Lookout Tower, and the best club in town (Shelter).
