Day Trips

The Zaanse Schans is a living open-air museum on the banks of the Zaan, just 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal (Station Zaandijk–Zaanse Schans). Here you'll find windmills, green wooden houses, cheese dairies, and clog makers in a landscape that looks like a painting from the 18th century.

Highlights

• Windmills: Six historic windmills still in operation — pressing oil, grinding paint, sawing wood. Some can be visited inside (4€ per mill). The De Kat (paint mill) and De Zoeker (oil mill) are the most interesting.
• Cheese Dairy: At Catharina Hoeve, Gouda cheese is made using traditional methods — demonstration and tasting included. Free of charge.
• Clog Maker: Watch as a wooden block becomes a clog in 5 minutes. The machines clatter, chips fly, and at the end, you can buy clogs (from 15€). Free of charge.
• Zaans Museum: History of the Zaan region, industrial culture, and the famous Monet room (Monet painted the Zaanse Schans in 1871). Admission: 15€.

Practical Information: Access to the open-air area is free — only windmills and the museum charge admission. Zaanse Schans Card (17€) for everything. Tip: Arrive early (before 10 am) or after 3 pm — tour buses are densest between 10 am and 2 pm. The silhouette of the windmills at sunset is a dream photo opportunity.

The Keukenhof near Lisse is the most famous flower park in the world — and it's only open 8 weeks a year (mid-March to mid-May). On 32 hectares, 7 million flower bulbs bloom: tulips in every conceivable color, daffodils, hyacinths, crocuses, orchids. A feast for the senses.

What You Will Experience

• Themed Gardens: A different theme each year. Formal gardens, woodland paths, water gardens, and pavilion exhibitions with artistic flower arrangements.
• Tulip Fields: The fields around Keukenhof (not in the park itself, but in the surrounding area) are the iconic tulip fields from postcards. Best explored by bike (rental available on site).
• Flower Parade: Once a year (usually mid/late April), a flower parade moves from Noordwijk to Haarlem — decorated floats, music, and the scent of millions of flowers.

Practical Information: Admission: 19.50€ (online only, no ticket sales at the gate!). Access: Combo bus 858 from Amsterdam Schiphol (airport, 35 min) or from Leiden/Haarlem. There are also combo tickets (bus + admission from 30€). Note: During peak bloom (mid-April), up to 30,000 visitors per day come. Visiting during the week and in the morning is the best strategy. Allow 3–4 hours.

Haarlem is the perfect day trip for anyone who wants to experience Amsterdam in a smaller scale and without tourists. The capital of the province of North Holland is only 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal and offers: canals, gabled houses, a first-class museum, cozy cafés, and the charm of a city that doesn't cater to tourists.

Highlights

• Grote Markt: Haarlem's central square with the Grote Kerk (St. Bavokerk) — a Gothic church housing the famous Müller organ, on which Mozart played as a ten-year-old (1766). Admission: 4€. On Saturdays: a large weekly market on the square.
• Frans Hals Museum: The life's work of portrait painter Frans Hals (1582–1666) in a beautiful 17th-century courtyard. Hals' group portraits of the civic guards are precursors to Rembrandt's Night Watch. Admission: 16€.
• Teylers Museum: The oldest museum in the Netherlands (1784) — science, art, and natural history in original preserved showcases. Like a time warp to the 18th century. Admission: 16€.
• Canals and Hofjes: Haarlem has its own canal belt and over 20 hofjes (most accessible for free). A walk through the old town is like a mini-Amsterdam without the crowds.
• Beach: From Haarlem, it's only 30 minutes by bus to the North Sea beach of Bloemendaal — Amsterdam's favorite beach with beach clubs, surf waves, and sunsets over the sea.

Volendam, Marken & Edam

The triangle of traditional fishing villages on the Markermeer, about 30 minutes north of Amsterdam. Volendam: colorful harbor, smoked fish, costume photo shop (fun for families). Marken: island with green wooden houses, accessible by boat from Volendam (30 min). Edam: the town of the famous cheese — in summer, there's the traditional cheese market (Wednesday mornings, July–August). Bus 316 from Amsterdam Centraal.

Delft

The city of Delft Blue (ceramics) and Vermeer. Picturesque canals, the Nieuwe Kerk with the tomb of William of Orange, and the Royal Delft Factory (tour: 15€). 1 hour by train from Amsterdam. Less touristy than Amsterdam, but more authentic. Ideal to combine with The Hague (only 15 min further).

The Hague & Scheveningen

The Hague (1 hour by train) is the seat of government of the Netherlands with the Peace Palace (International Court of Justice), the Mauritshuis (Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring"!), and the Binnenhof. The seaside resort Scheveningen is accessible by tram from the center — beach, pier, and fresh fish. Perfect excursion in good weather.

Utrecht

The fourth largest city in the Netherlands (30 min by train) surprises with a medieval old town, the Dom Tower (112 m, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, climbable!) and unique wharf cellars — canals with restaurants and cafés at water level, one floor below street level. Less touristy than Amsterdam, with a student vibe and great gastronomy scene.
