Sports-obsessed Nation
Sport is religion in Australia — with real services on weekends. For a country with only 26 million people, Australia's sporting dominance is astonishing: Olympic medals, cricket world championships, surf champions, tennis stars, and its own unique sport — Australian Rules Football (AFL).
The Major Sports
- AFL (Australian Rules Football): Australia's most popular sport — a mix of rugby, soccer, and organized chaos on an oval field. The AFL Grand Final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is Australia's Super Bowl — 100,000 spectators, an entire nation captivated. Tickets start at 85 AUD for regular games, but the Grand Final is practically impossible to get.
- Cricket: The summer sport. A Test Match lasts 5 days and is less boring than it sounds — the atmosphere at the MCG or SCG with beer and meat pies is unique. The Ashes (against England) is the biggest rivalry in cricket. Boxing Day Test (December 26) at the MCG is a tradition.
- Rugby League (NRL): Especially popular in NSW and Queensland. The State of Origin (NSW vs. Queensland, 3 games/year) divides families and friendships.
- Surfing: More than a sport, a lifestyle. Australia has more professional surfers than any other country. Bells Beach (Victoria), Snapper Rocks (Gold Coast), and Margaret River are world-class breaks.
- Swimming: Australians grow up in the water. Their dominance at the Olympic Games (only the USA wins more swimming medals) speaks for itself. Every suburb has its own pool (often seawater pools right by the ocean).
