Best Travel Time
Australia spans several climate zones — the best travel time greatly depends on where you are going. Basic rule: The seasons are opposite to the European ones (December = summer, June = winter).
The Seasons (reversed!)
- Australian Summer (Dec–Feb): Best time for Sydney, Melbourne, Great Ocean Road, Tasmania. Long days, beach weather (25–35 °C). However, in the tropical north, it's the rainy season with cyclones — avoid Queensland and NT!
- Australian Autumn (Mar–May): Excellent travel time for almost everything. The tropical north dries up, the Outback is pleasantly warm, Sydney and Melbourne are mild. Fewer tourists than in summer.
- Australian Winter (Jun–Aug): Best time for the tropical north (Queensland, NT, Kimberley): dry, 25–30 °C. Outback pleasant during the day, cold at night. Sydney mild (8–17 °C). Melbourne cool and rainy.
- Australian Spring (Sep–Nov): Wildflowers in Western Australia (September–October). Outback warms up. Good transitional time for the south. Whales on the east coast (Jun–Nov).

💡 Tipp
Australia can be visited year-round — you just need to choose the right region at the right time. For a tour through both the south and north, the transitional periods of April/May and September/October are ideal when both climate zones are pleasant.
Achtung
In the tropical north (Queensland, NT), the "Wet Season" occurs from November to April with tropical cyclones, floods, and dangerous box jellyfish in the sea. Many roads and national parks are closed during this time.
