Wine, Cava & Beverages

Catalan Wine

Catalonia is a top wine region — often underestimated next to Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but with growing prestige. The main wine-growing areas around Barcelona:

  • Penedès: The home of Cava — and increasingly excellent still wines. 45 minutes southwest of Barcelona.
  • Priorat: Catalonia's prestige region — concentrated, powerful red wines from steep slate terraces. Comparable to the best wines in the world. 1.5 hours south of Barcelona.
  • Empordà: On the Costa Brava — fresh rosés and elegant white wines with a sea influence.

Cava

Cava is Catalonia's sparkling wine — produced using the Champagne method, but at a fraction of the price. In Barcelona, Cava is enjoyed with (almost) everything: as an aperitif, with meals, at the bar. The best Cavas come from Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (45 minutes from Barcelona) — the major houses Codorníu and Freixenet offer tours.

Beverage Culture

  • Cerveza / Caña: A small draft beer (caña, 200ml) costs 2–3€. Estrella Damm is Barcelona's local beer. Moritz (since 1856) is the craft alternative.
  • Vermut: Vermouth on ice with an orange slice — the Sunday ritual. The brand Yzaguirre is the classic.
  • Gin Tónic: In Spain, Gin Tónic is an art form: large Copa glasses, botanical garnishes (rosemary, cucumber, grapefruit), premium gins. A good Gin Tónic costs 8–14€.
  • Clara: Beer with lemon soda — the summer drink. Refreshing and light.
