Montjuïc — The Cultural Mountain

The Montjuïc (184 m) is Barcelona's green local mountain — a former fortress mountain that has transformed into an open-air cultural center. Museums, gardens, the 1992 Olympic Stadium, the Magic Fountain, and one of the best panoramic views of the city make Montjuïc the perfect half-day or full-day excursion.

MNAC — Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya

The MNAC is perched in the Palau Nacional and houses the best Romanesque art collection in the world: wall paintings from Pyrenean churches of the 11th–13th centuries, unique in their intensity and state of preservation. Also Gothic and Baroque art, Art Nouveau, and a growing photo collection. The terrace with a view over Barcelona is freely accessible. Admission: €12, free on Saturdays from 3 PM and on the first Sunday of the month.

Fundació Joan Miró

The Fundació Joan Miró (1975, architect: Josep Lluís Sert) is dedicated to the Barcelona-born artist Joan Miró — over 10,000 works in a light-flooded building with a sculpture garden and rooftop terrace. Miró's colorful, childlike playful works form a perfect contrast to the austere architecture. Admission: €14.

Font Màgica — The Magic Fountain

The Font Màgica de Montjuïc (1929) offers free water, light, and music shows against the dramatic backdrop of the Palau Nacional. Hundreds of water jets dance in sync to music — from classical to pop. A spectacle for the whole family. Shows: Thu–Sat evenings (times vary seasonally, usually 9–10 PM in summer). Free.

Olympic Heritage

The 1992 Olympic Games transformed Barcelona — and on Montjuïc stand the icons:

  • Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys: The Olympic Stadium (originally 1929, rebuilt 1992) with the famous Calatrava Tower. Viewable from the outside.
  • Palau Sant Jordi: The sports hall by Arata Isozaki — now a concert venue. International stars perform here.
  • Picornell Swimming Pool: Public swimming pool — you can swim where Olympians competed for medals in 1992! Admission: approx. €7.

Castell de Montjuïc

The fortress on the summit of Montjuïc has a grim history: From here, Barcelona was bombarded, and political prisoners were executed. Today: museum and viewpoint with a 360° panorama over the city, port, and sea. Admission: €5, free on Sundays from 3 PM. The cable car (Teleféric de Montjuïc) up costs €13 one-way.
