Manaus — Gateway to the Jungle

★★ Manaus — The Metropolis in the Jungle

Manaus is a two-million metropolis in the middle of the Amazon rainforest — accessible only by flight or multi-day boat trip. The city is the unavoidable gateway to the Brazilian Amazon and has a fascinating history: at the end of the 19th century, it became the richest city in South America due to the rubber boom — so wealthy that an opera house was built from European marble.

★★★ Teatro Amazonas

The iconic opera house of Manaus (1896) is an architectural marvel in the middle of the jungle. The dome made of 36,000 decorated tiles in the colors of the Brazilian flag, the Carrara marble from Italy, the iron structure by Eiffel, and the chandeliers from Murano — all transported by ship across the Amazon. A testament to the rubber craze and one of the most absurd stories of colonialism.

Tours daily (30 BRL / 5€, 30 min). Or — even better — attend a performance (concerts, operas, often free or very cheap).

★★ Mercado Adolpho Lisboa

The historic market of Manaus (1883), modeled after the Parisian Les Halles. Here you can find everything the Amazon has to offer: giant fish (Pirarucu, up to 3 meters long!), exotic fruits (Cupuaçu, Camu-Camu, Açaí), medicinal plants, spices, and home remedies of indigenous medicine. A sensory experience.

Practical Manaus

Manaus itself deserves 1 day: Teatro Amazonas, Mercado, Ponta Negra (city beach on the Rio Negro). The real attraction is the jungle around it. All Amazon adventures start from Manaus: jungle lodges, boat expeditions, the meeting of the waters.

Flights from São Paulo/GRU (3.5h, LATAM/GOL/Azul, from 250 BRL one-way), from Rio (3.5h), from Brasília (3h). No direct flight from Europe. Climate: year-round 28–35°C, very humid. Dry season Jun–Nov (less rain, hiking trails accessible). Rainy season Dec–May (higher water level, more canoe tours).
