Gastronomy & Nightlife
São Paulo — Gastro Capital of South America
São Paulo is the culinary capital of Latin America — and one of the great food metropolises of the world. Over 12,000 restaurants represent practically every cuisine on the planet: Italian in Bixiga, Japanese in Liberdade, Arabic on 25 de Março, and of course Brazilian in all its variations. Several restaurants are on the "50 Best" list of Latin America:
- A Casa do Porco: Regularly among the top 10 restaurants in the world. Pork in all variations, creative and unforgettable. Reservations weeks in advance!
- D.O.M.: Alex Atala's flagship — Brazilian fine dining with Amazonian ingredients. Pioneering.
- Maní: Modern Brazilian cuisine by chef Helena Rizzo.
- Pizza: São Paulo has the second-largest pizza scene in the world (after New York). 6,000+ pizzerias, many in Bixiga (Bela Vista). The "Pizza Paulistana" is thick, richly topped, and ordered whole.
Nightlife
São Paulo's nightlife is legendary and never ends. The city truly never sleeps — many clubs open only after midnight, and after-hours parties go until Monday noon. The scene is incredibly diverse:
- D-Edge: One of the best electronic clubs in South America. International DJs, Funktion-One sound system, architecturally impressive.
- Bar da Dona Onça: Cocktails and Brazilian tapas in the Art Deco ambiance of Edifício Itália.
- Vila Madalena Bars: Indie, rock, live music, craft beer — the nightlife district for those who don't like mega-clubs.
- Rua Augusta: The most notorious party street — from underground clubs to LGBTQ+ bars to rock pubs. Wild, loud, unforgettable.
Day Trip: Santos
Santos, 70 km southeast, is São Paulo's beach access and has the largest beach garden in the world (5.3 km long!). The Pelé Museum in the historic center is a must for football fans. The old coffee exchange (Bolsa do Café) in a magnificent Art Deco palace tells the story of the Brazilian coffee boom. Reachable in 1–1.5h by bus or car.
💡 Tipp
São Paulo's gastronomy scene offers unbeatable value for money: At "Prato feito," you can eat your fill for 20–30 BRL (3.50–5€), and even upscale restaurants often cost only half of comparable places in Europe. The best insider tips can be found on Instagram under #comidadesaopaulo.
