The Four Seasons
Spring (April–May): The Great Awakening
The cherry trees bloom in Copenhagen (Bispebjerg Kirkegård is the Danish cherry blossom mecca), the days rapidly get longer, and the country awakens from its winter slumber. Temperatures: 8–16°C. Spring is ideal for city trips to Copenhagen and Aarhus — fewer tourists, lower prices, blooming parks. From May, outdoor pools and beach bars open.
Summer (June–August): Beach Time & Festival Season
The best travel time for most visitors. Temperatures from 17–25°C (occasionally over 28°C), endless evenings, warm Baltic Sea water for swimming (18–22°C). The Danes flock to their summer houses — and you should do the same. Peak season is from Midsummer (Sankt Hans, June 23) to mid-August. The festival season is in full swing: Roskilde Festival (Rock/Pop), Smukfest (Skanderborg), Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Tip: The North Sea beaches in West Jutland are magnificent in summer — wide, deserted sandy beaches, perfect for surfing, kite flying, and beach hiking. However, the water is cooler (15–18°C) than in the Baltic Sea.
Autumn (September–October): Golden Light & Culture
The Danish autumn is underrated. Golden light over beech forests, mushrooms and apples in abundance, fewer tourists, and cultural highlights (Aarhus Festuge, Copenhagen Cooking). Temperatures: 8–16°C. September is often still mild and sunny — perfect for cycling tours on Funen or Bornholm. From October, it becomes cooler and rainier, but the cozy hygge season begins.
Winter (November–February): Hygge Time & Christmas Magic
The Danish winter is dark, damp, and cozy. Temperatures around freezing, occasional snow (but rarely lasting long). Highlights: Tivoli in Christmas decoration (November–December) is world-famous, Julefrokost (Christmas dinner with friends), mulled wine (gløgg) at Christmas markets, and the Danish tradition of candles and coziness. January and February are the quietest months — ideal for affordable city trips with few tourists.
💡 Tipp
Most tourists come in July and August. For less crowding and lower prices: June (early peak season, long days, summer houses still available) or September (mild temperatures, golden light, autumn festivals).
