★★★ The Grand Spectacle

Every winter, 1,500–2,000 humpback whales come from the North Atlantic to the warm Bahía de Samaná and the Silver Bank (north of the peninsula) to mate and give birth to their calves. It is one of the best whale watching areas in the world — the bay is like a natural amphitheater where the whales surface just a few hundred meters from the boats.

What you can see:

  • Breaching — Whales jump completely out of the water (40 tons, 15 meters long!)
  • Tail Slapping — Tail fin slaps on the water surface
  • Mother-calf pairs — Newborn calves (6 meters long at birth!) swim alongside their mothers
  • Singing — With a hydrophone, you can hear the complex songs of the males underwater

The season officially runs from January 15 to March 15. Peak: mid-February to early March. The tours are strictly regulated — only licensed boats are allowed in the bay, with a minimum distance from the animals.

Tours & Providers

  • Whale Samaná (Kim Beddall) — The pioneer of whale watching in Samaná, since 1985. Small groups, biological explanations, hydrophone. The best provider. About 60–70 USD.
  • Moto Marina — Good alternative, larger boats. From 50 USD.
  • From Punta Cana/Santo Domingo: Full-day tours with bus transfer + boat. From 120–180 USD. Long day (12+ hours), but doable.

The tours start from the port of Samaná city, last 3–4 hours, and often include a stop at Cayo Levantado.

💡 Tipp

Book the earliest tour of the day (usually 8:30 or 9:00 AM) — the sea is calmer in the morning (less seasickness!) and the whales are more active. Bring Biodramina/travel tablets, a rain jacket, and a waterproof camera/phone case.
