Climate Overview
Guatemala is located between the 13th and 18th degrees north latitude — tropical, but extremely diverse thanks to the altitude differences (0–4,220 m). The rule of thumb: The higher, the cooler. Temperatures remain relatively constant throughout the year — there are no seasons in the European sense, but a dry season (Verano) and a rainy season (Invierno).
| Region | Altitude | Dry Season (Nov–Apr) | Rainy Season (May–Oct) | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highlands (Antigua, Atitlán) | 1,500–2,500 m | 18–25°C, sunny | 15–22°C, afternoon rain | “Eternal Spring", cool at night (10–15°C) |
| Petén (Tikal) | 100–300 m | 25–35°C, humid | 25–35°C, heavy showers | Hot and humid year-round |
| Caribbean Coast | 0–50 m | 25–32°C | 25–32°C, very humid | Rain possible year-round, Sep is wettest |
| Pacific Coast | 0–100 m | 28–35°C | 28–35°C, heavy downpours | Hot, humid, less touristy |
Important: In the highlands (Antigua, Atitlán, Chichicastenango), there is a pleasant, spring-like climate — Guatemalans call it “Land of Eternal Spring". However, it can get quite cold at night (10°C and below), especially from November to February. A warm jacket is a must!
