Beverages

Alcoholic

  • Ron Zacapa: Guatemala's premium rum — aged at over 2,300 meters (the highest rum cellar in the world), up to 25 years old. Blended using the Sistema Solera method, smooth like cognac. Zacapa 23 costs about 25€ in Guatemala (40€+ in Germany). Try it neat on ice.
  • Gallo: "The Rooster" — Guatemala's national beer. A light lager, perfect when ice-cold at 35°C in Petén. Available everywhere, 5–10 GTQ (under 1€) in stores.
  • Quetzalteca (Indita): The people's aguardiente (sugarcane spirit). Sharp, cheap, everywhere. Consumed in large quantities at festivals. Not to everyone's taste, but authentic.
  • Michelada: Beer with lime juice, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and sometimes tomato sauce — the perfect hangover cure and a popular midday drink.

Non-alcoholic

  • Licuados: Fresh fruit smoothies, made with water (con agua) or milk (con leche). Mango, papaya, banana, strawberry — available at every market stall for 5–10 GTQ. One of the best things in Guatemala.
  • Horchata: A sweet, cinnamon-flavored rice milk drink — refreshing and perfect for spicy cuisine.
  • Atole: A hot, thick corn drink — available in variations with chocolate (champurrado), with black beans, or plain. A comfort drink for cool highland mornings.
  • Rosa de Jamaica: Cold-brewed hibiscus tea, sweet and refreshing. Available everywhere as Agua fresca.
