Arrival & Transport

How to get to Laos and travel around — by plane, Slow Boat, China-Laos Railway, VIP bus, and Tuk-Tuk.

By Plane

There are no direct flights from Germany to Laos. You will fly with a layover, typically via Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur.

International Airports

Vientiane Wattay (VTE) — Capital

The largest airport in the country, just 3 km west of the city center. Connections to Bangkok (1.5h), Hanoi (1h), Ho Chi Minh City (2h), Singapore (3h), Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Chiang Mai. Airlines: Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Lao Airlines, AirAsia, Bangkok Airways.

Transfer: Official taxi to the center 7 USD (10 min). Tuk-Tuk 5 USD. No public bus.

Luang Prabang (LPQ)

Small but well-connected airport, 4 km northeast of the old town. Connections to Bangkok (2h), Hanoi (1h), Chiang Mai (1.5h), Siem Reap (1.5h). Airlines: Lao Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Vietnam Airlines.

Transfer: Minivan shuttle to the center 50,000 LAK (2 EUR). Tuk-Tuk 50,000–60,000 LAK. Hotels offer free pickup.

Pakse (PKZ) — South

Small airport with connections to Vientiane (Lao Airlines, 1.5h), Bangkok, and Ho Chi Minh City. Gateway to the south (4000 Islands, Bolaven Plateau, Champasak).

Flight Prices (Estimates from Germany)

PeriodPrice (Round Trip)
Low Season (May–Oct)500–700 EUR
Shoulder Season (Mar–Apr, Nov)600–800 EUR
High Season (Dec–Feb)700–1,100 EUR

Tipp

The cheapest route: Fly to Bangkok (from 350 EUR return), then continue to Vientiane or Luang Prabang with AirAsia or Bangkok Airways (from 40 EUR). Or: Fly to Chiang Mai + bus/boat to Laos via Huay Xai — the most adventurous option including the Mekong Slow Boat.

China-Laos Railway (New!)

The New Railway — a Game Changer

Since December 2021, the China-Laos Railway connects the Chinese border town of Boten with Vientiane — 422 km of high-speed track through 75 tunnels and over 167 bridges. What used to be a grueling 2-day bus ride now takes just under 4 hours.

Route and Stops

StationDistance from VientianeTravel Time
Vientiane0 km
Vang Vieng110 km1h 10min
Luang Prabang250 km2h
Luang Namtha380 km3h 20min
Boten (Chinese border)422 km3h 50min

Practical Information

  • Prices: Vientiane → Luang Prabang: approx. 200,000 LAK (8 EUR) 2nd class, approx. 300,000 LAK (12 EUR) 1st class
  • Frequency: 2–4 trains per day in each direction
  • Booking: At the station (Vientiane Station is 15 km outside!), via the LCR app, or through travel agencies
  • Comfort: Modern, air-conditioned trains with wide seats, luggage racks, and dining cars

The railway has revolutionized travel planning in Laos: Vientiane → Vang Vieng in 1h 10min (instead of 4h by bus), Vientiane → Luang Prabang in 2h (instead of 10h by bus or 2-day Slow Boat). However, the Slow Boat remains the more emotional experience!

Tipp

The train stations are often far from city centers (Vientiane: 15 km, Luang Prabang: 7 km). Plan for the Tuk-Tuk ride to the station (30,000–50,000 LAK). Book tickets online via the LCR app or the day before at the station — popular routes sell out quickly, especially in high season.

Slow Boat, Buses & Tuk-Tuks

Slow Boat on the Mekong

The legendary Slow-Boat journey from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang is one of Southeast Asia's great travel experiences. Two days on the mighty Mekong, passing jungle mountains, buffalo herds, and tiny fishing villages:

  • Day 1: Huay Xai → Pak Beng (approx. 7h). Departure around 11:00. Overnight in Pak Beng.
  • Day 2: Pak Beng → Luang Prabang (approx. 7h). Departure around 9:00. Arrival in the late afternoon.
  • Price: approx. 250,000 LAK (10 EUR) for the basic boat, bring a cushion and blanket!
  • Comfort: Wooden benches (hard!), no food on board (stock up in Pak Beng). Toilet available (basic).

There are also Speedboats (6h instead of 2 days, 300,000 LAK), but they are noisy, uncomfortable, and dangerous. The Slow Boat is the experience — take your time!

VIP Buses

The overland bus network connects all major cities. The quality varies greatly:

RouteDurationPriceComment
Vientiane → Luang Prabang (VIP Bus)9–11h150,000–200,000 LAKMountain roads with hairpin bends — travel sickness pills!
Vientiane → Vang Vieng3–4h50,000–80,000 LAKGood road
Luang Prabang → Nong Khiaw3–4h50,000 LAKSpectacular mountain road
Luang Prabang → Phonsavan6–8h110,000 LAKWinding, bumpy
Vientiane → Pakse8–10h150,000–180,000 LAKVIP night bus available
Pakse → 4000 Islands2–3h50,000–65,000 LAKIncl. boat transfer to Don Det

Tuk-Tuks & Sǎwngthǎew

Tuk-Tuks (motorized tricycles) are the standard mode of transport in the cities. In the countryside, Sǎwngthǎew — converted pick-up trucks with benches on the loading area — are used. Always negotiate the price beforehand!

  • Short Tuk-Tuk ride in the city: 20,000–30,000 LAK
  • Kuang Si Waterfall from Luang Prabang (Tuk-Tuk, return): 200,000–250,000 LAK
  • Sǎwngthǎew (Shared): from 20,000 LAK depending on the route

Achtung

Bus rides in Laos are notorious. The mountain roads in the north are winding, often unpaved, and the driving style is... ambitious. Bring travel sickness pills! The Vientiane → Luang Prabang route by bus takes 10+ hours on hairpin bends — the new railway (2h) or a flight (40 min) are the better choices unless you're seeking adventure.
