Marsaxlokk & the Fish Market

Marsaxlokk (pronounced "Marsa-schlock") is Malta's most picturesque fishing village — a place that imprints itself in every photo album. The small harbor on the southeast coast is lined with colorful Luzzu boats featuring the traditional Eye of Osiris (Ochju) on the bow, meant to protect fishermen from the evil eye. Behind them stand pastel-colored houses, and church towers rise in the background.

The Sunday Market

Marsaxlokk's Sunday market is an institution. Along the harbor promenade, fishermen and vendors set up their stalls: freshly caught fish (swordfish, lampuki, squid, shrimp), Maltese honey, dried herbs, capers from Gozo, handmade pasta, and souvenirs. The market is in full swing from 6:00 to 13:00 — come early for the best fish and the most beautiful photos before the tour groups arrive.

Dining by the Harbor

Marsaxlokk is the best place in Malta to eat fish. The restaurants right on the harbor promenade serve the catch of the day — grilled, fried, or in Malta's famous Aljotta (fish soup with garlic, tomatoes, and herbs). Prices are a bit higher than inland, but absolutely justified for the quality and atmosphere. Be sure to try Lampuki (dorado), Malta's most popular fish — seasonally available from September to December.

On weekdays, Marsaxlokk is much quieter than on Sundays — the restaurants are often cheaper, and you have the picturesque harbor almost to yourself.

St. Peter's Pool

Just a few kilometers south of Marsaxlokk lies St. Peter's Pool — one of Malta's best natural swimming spots. A natural rock pool with crystal-clear water, surrounded by flat limestone rocks, perfect for sunbathing and cliff diving (with caution!). No infrastructure, no loungers, no entrance fee — just nature. Popular with locals and tourists alike in summer, but never as crowded as the Blue Lagoon. Water shoes are a must — the rock is sharp-edged.
