Bucharest's Food Scene

Bucharest's gastronomy has undergone a revolution in recent years. Alongside traditional Romanian restaurants (Crama = wine cellar restaurant), an innovative scene has emerged, combining local ingredients with modern techniques. Several restaurants are listed in the Michelin Guide — at prices unimaginable in Paris or Berlin.

  • Caru' cu Bere — The legendary beer house (since 1879) in the Old Town is a neo-Gothic masterpiece with stained glass windows, traditional Romanian cuisine, and live music. Touristy, but the atmosphere is unique. Main course: 8–15€.
  • Lacrimi și Sfinți — Creative Romanian cuisine in a hidden courtyard. One of the best restaurants in the city. Menu: 25–40€.
  • Hanu' lui Manuc — The historic inn from 1808 serves traditional Wallachian cuisine in the courtyard. Authentic, touristy, but a piece of history. Main course: 6–12€.
  • Obor Market (Piața Obor) — Bucharest's largest market: fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, sausages, and homemade spirits. Most authentic in the morning. The best place to experience Romanian food.

Nightlife

Bucharest's nightlife is legendary and affordable. The Old Town (Centrul Vechi) transforms into a giant open-air party from 10 PM — dozens of bars and clubs in close quarters, streets full of people, and a beer rarely costs more than 2–3€. But the real Bucharest doesn't just party in the Old Town:

  • Control Club — Indie, alternative, electronic music in a former cinema. Bucharest's coolest club. Admission: 0–5€.
  • Expirat — Underground club with live music and DJ sets. For years, the address for the local scene.
  • Energiea — Huge club complex with various areas. Everything from techno to pop.
  • Rooftop Bars — Bucharest's rooftop terraces offer panoramic views over the chaotic skyline. Cocktails from 5–8€.

💡 Tipp

The Old Town (Centrul Vechi) is extremely crowded and noisy on weekends. For a more authentic experience: The neighborhoods around Calea Victoriei and Herăstrău Park have better restaurants and quieter bars — at the same affordable prices.
