Traditional Music, Hanbok & Temple Stays

Behind the K-Pop glamour, Korea's traditional art scene thrives — centuries-old forms that are surprisingly vibrant and accessible to travelers:

Pansori (판소리)

Korea's traditional narrative art: A singer and a drummer tell epic stories lasting hours — with singing, recitative, theatrical gestures, and an enormous vocal range. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In Seoul: Performances at the National Theater of Korea and the Jeongdong Theater.

Hanbok (한복)

Korea's traditional attire — flowing lines, bright colors, elegant shapes. Once everyday wear, now worn at festivals and photoshoots. Modern Hanbok is a new trend: Designers reinterpret traditional forms with modern fabrics and cuts — wearable in everyday life. In Seoul: Rent a Hanbok and get photographed in the palaces.

Templestay (템플스테이)

One of the most unique experiences in Korea: Overnight stay in a Buddhist temple. You wake up at 3:30 AM, meditate, chant with the monks, eat vegan temple food (Balwoo Gongyang), hike through the mountains, and find peace. Programs last 1–3 days and cost ₩50,000–80,000 (35–56 €). The best: Haeinsa (home to the Tripitaka Koreana, 80,000 woodblocks), Golgulsa (with Sunmudo — temple martial arts), Beomeosa (near Busan).

Ceramics & Tea

Korean Celadon ceramics (Cheongja) from the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) are among the world's finest ceramics — jade green, translucent, with inlays. In Icheon (1 hour from Seoul), there are dozens of pottery workshops where you can craft your own pieces. The Korean tea culture is subtler than the Japanese, yet equally meditative — green tea from Boseong, chrysanthemum tea, barley tea (Boricha).

💡 Tipp

A templestay is one of the most impressive experiences in Korea — book through the official website templestay.com (English version available). For beginners: Choose a program with English guidance. Haeinsa (near Daegu) and Golgulsa (near Gyeongju) are particularly well-suited for international guests.
