★★ Dar es Salaam — The Vibrant Port City

Dar es Salaam (6 million inhabitants) is by far the largest city in Tanzania and the economic, cultural, and logistical center of the country — even though the official capital has been Dodoma since 1996. The name means in Arabic "Harbor of Peace" (Dar as-Salam), which sometimes sounds ironic given the chaotic traffic and the city's pulsating energy.

Most travelers to Tanzania use Dar es Salaam as a transit city on their way to Zanzibar, the southern national parks, or as a point of arrival/departure. However, those who give the city a day will be surprised: Dar has character, history, and a vibrant cultural scene.

Sights

• National Museum: The most important museum in Tanzania. Highlights: the originals of the Olduvai finds (Homo habilis, Paranthropus boisei), ethnography collection, and a moving exhibition on the German colonial period. Admission: 10,000 TZS. Botanical garden next door.
• Kariakoo Market: The largest market in East Africa. An overwhelming chaos of colors, smells, and sounds. Here you find everything: spices, fabrics (Khanga and Kitenge), fish, fruits, electronics, traditional medicine. Not a tourist spot — watch your valuables!
• Kivukoni Fish Market: The fish market at the harbor is a spectacle early in the morning (6–8 am): fishermen bring in their catch, traders haggle, and the restaurants right at the market prepare the fish fresh.
• Askari Monument: The city's landmark at the roundabout Samora Avenue / Azikiwe Street. Bronze statue of an askari (African soldier) who fought for the British in World War I.
• Slipway & Coco Beach: The waterfront promenade in the Msasani district with restaurants, boutiques, and views of the harbor. A popular meeting point in the evenings.

★★ Bagamoyo — Where History Lives

Bagamoyo, 65 km north of Dar es Salaam, is one of the most historic towns in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage candidate. The name means in Swahili "Lay down your heart" (bwaga moyo) — the last thought of the slaves who were shipped from here to Zanzibar and the world.

In the 19th century, Bagamoyo was the most important trade and mission center in East Africa. Here the caravan routes from the interior ended, and here the expeditions of Burton, Speke, Stanley, and Livingstone began. The Germans made Bagamoyo the first capital of German East Africa (1887–1891) before moving the administration to Dar es Salaam.

Today, Bagamoyo is a sleepy coastal town with crumbling colonial charm:

• Historic Old Town: German and Arab buildings, old caravanserais, the customs house at the harbor.
• Catholic Mission (1868): One of the oldest mission stations in East Africa. Here David Livingstone was laid out after his death before his body was transferred to England.
• Kaole Ruins: Ruins of a 13th-century Swahili settlement, 5 km south. Mosque and graves.
• Beaches: A few kilometers north there are quiet, beautiful beaches with simple accommodations.

Day trip from Dar es Salaam (1.5–2h drive) or overnight stay. Ideal combination with a beach day.

★★★ Mafia Island — The Diving Paradise

Mafia Island is Tanzania's best-kept secret — a tropical island south of Dar es Salaam that offers everything Zanzibar has (beaches, coral reefs, spices) but without the mass tourism. The island hosts the Mafia Island Marine Park, the largest marine reserve in East Africa.

Mafia is a world-class diving destination:

• Corals: Intact, species-rich coral reefs with over 400 fish species, giant groupers, Napoleon wrasses, octopuses.
• Whale Sharks: From October to March, whale sharks visit the waters around Mafia — snorkeling and diving with the gentle giants is possible (ethically responsible, only with licensed providers).
• Turtles: Green sea turtles nest on the pristine beaches. During the nesting season (June–September), you can observe the egg-laying.
• Visibility: 15–30 m, water temperature 25–29°C year-round.

The infrastructure on Mafia is deliberately kept simple: Few, ecologically managed lodges and guesthouses, no large resorts. That's what makes the charm. Mafia is for divers and nature lovers who want to escape the mainstream.

Arrival: Flight from Dar es Salaam (30 min., Auric Air/Coastal Aviation, approx. 150–250 USD one way). Alternatively: slow ferry (several hours, adventurous).

★★ Mikumi — Safari Within Reach

Mikumi National Park (3,230 km²) is the most easily accessible park from Dar es Salaam — just a 4–5 hour drive on a good paved road. Mikumi borders directly on the vast Nyerere Reserve (formerly Selous) and offers surprisingly good wildlife density for its proximity to the big city.

The Mkata Plain in the center of the park strongly resembles the Serengeti: open grasslands, acacia trees, lions in the morning sun, giraffes against the backdrop of the Uluguru Mountains. Mikumi offers:

• Lions: Regularly in the Mkata Plain, often right by the road.
• Elephants: Large herds, especially by the Mkata River.
• Giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, impalas: In large numbers.
• Buffaloes: Huge herds, especially in the dry season.
• Hippos: At the Hippo Pool in the south of the park.

Mikumi is ideal for a 2–3-day excursion from Dar es Salaam or as an entry point into a southern safari route (Mikumi → Ruaha → Nyerere). The park fees are significantly cheaper at 30 USD/day than in the north.
