About Tangshan

Tangshan is an industrial city in Hebei Province, about 150 km east of Beijing, which became globally known due to the devastating earthquake on July 28, 1976. With a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale, it destroyed the entire city in 23 seconds and claimed over 240,000 lives — one of the deadliest natural disasters of the 20th century. The Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Museum is an impressive monument: The memorial park includes preserved ruins, a memorial wall with the names of the victims, and a modern museum documenting the destruction and reconstruction. The city was completely rebuilt and is now considered a symbol of Chinese resilience. Tangshan has developed into the ceramic capital of northern China: Tangshan ceramics have a tradition of over 600 years and are famous for their bone china production — a large portion of the high-quality porcelain made in China comes from here. The ceramic museum and factory visits are highlights for culture enthusiasts. Tangshan's coast surprises with natural beauty: The Caofeidian Wetlands are an important bird sanctuary, and the offshore islands of Yütuoshan offer sandy beaches and seafood restaurants. The Qinhuangdao coast (including the famous resort of Beidaihe) is easily accessible from Tangshan. The Kailuan Mining Museum documents Tangshan's industrial history as China's first modern coal mine (since 1878). The city is currently undergoing a transformation from heavy industry to tourism and has developed the southern seaside promenade at Nanhu Park into a modern recreation area.
