Do I need a passport for EU travel?

For travel within the EU and the Schengen Area, a valid national ID card is sufficient — a passport is not strictly necessary. However, there are exceptions: for flights to the United Kingdom (no longer an EU member since Brexit), you will need a passport. A passport may also be required for cruises that call at non-EU ports. We recommend bringing both your ID card and passport on any trip abroad. Make sure that your document is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date — many non-EU countries require this.

What is a visa and when do I need one?

A visa is an entry permit issued by the embassy or consulate of the destination country. German citizens can enter over 190 countries visa-free or with visas on arrival — one of the strongest passports in the world. For popular destinations like the USA (ESTA), Canada (eTA), Australia (eVisitor), or India (e-Visa), an electronic visa is required in advance. For China, Russia, and many African countries, you must apply for a traditional visa at the embassy. Always check the entry requirements on the website of the Federal Foreign Office and apply for visas in good time — some take several weeks.

How do I apply for a passport?

You apply for a passport in person at the citizens' office or passport authority in your municipality. You will need: your old passport or ID card, a biometric passport photo, your birth certificate (for first-time applications), and the registration confirmation. The costs are 60 euros for adults (24 years and older) and 37.50 euros for those under 24 years. The regular processing time is 6–8 weeks, or 3 working days in the express procedure for an additional fee of 32 euros. Plan to apply well in advance of your trip — during holiday periods, citizens' offices are often overloaded and appointments can be hard to come by.

What to do if I lose my passport while on vacation?

Report the loss immediately to the local police and obtain a loss report. Then contact the nearest German embassy or consulate — they can issue a temporary travel document (emergency passport) that is valid for your return to Germany. You will need the loss report, a passport photo, and if possible, a copy of your passport. Tip: Make copies of all important documents before every trip and store them digitally in the cloud. The temporary travel document costs 26 euros and is only valid for a limited time — some countries do not accept it for entry, but it is always sufficient for your return home.

How does ESTA for the USA work?

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an electronic entry permit for the USA that you can apply for as a German citizen instead of a visa. You fill out an online form on the official website (esta.cbp.dhs.gov) — be cautious of paid third-party sites! The fee is 21 USD, and the authorization is usually granted within 72 hours. ESTA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires and allows for tourist or business stays of up to 90 days. Apply for ESTA at least 72 hours before departure, preferably 2 weeks in advance.

What vaccinations do I need for long-distance travel?

The recommended vaccinations depend heavily on the destination. For Southeast Asia, Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and depending on the region, Rabies are recommended. For Africa south of the Sahara, Yellow Fever (often mandatory!), Meningococci, and Malaria prophylaxis are important. For South America, you should consider Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, and Typhoid. In general, standard vaccinations (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Polio) should be up to date. Consult a tropical medicine specialist or a travel medicine advisory center at least 6 weeks before departure. Many health insurance companies reimburse travel vaccinations as a voluntary benefit.

What customs regulations apply when returning to Germany?

When returning from a non-EU country, you may bring goods worth up to 430 euros (for air travel) or 300 euros (for land travel) duty-free. Strict limits apply for tobacco and alcohol: 200 cigarettes, 1 liter of spirits over 22%, and 4 liters of wine. When returning from EU countries, there are no customs limits, but guidelines for personal use (e.g., 800 cigarettes) apply. Certain goods such as animal products, counterfeit branded products, and protected souvenirs are not allowed to be imported at all. Keep receipts for valuable purchases.
