Puyang is a district city in the northeast of Henan Province, located on the southern bank of the Yellow River. The city is considered the cradle of dragon culture in China — here, in 1987, the oldest dragon mosaic in the world was discovered, a shell mosaic image of a dragon from the Yangshao culture (about 6,000 years old). Puyang therefore carries the honorary name Zhonghua Diyilong — home of the first Chinese dragon.

In ancient times, the city was the capital of the State of Wei during the Warring States period (475–221 BC) and a center of political and military power.
