About Puyang

Puyang is a district city in the northeast of Henan Province, located on the southern bank of the Yellow River. The city is considered the cradle of dragon culture in China — here, in 1987, the oldest dragon mosaic in the world was discovered, a shell mosaic image of a dragon from the Yangshao culture (about 6,000 years old). Puyang therefore carries the honorary name Zhonghua Diyilong — home of the first Chinese dragon. In ancient times, the city was the capital of the State of Wei during the Warring States period (475–221 BC) and a center of political and military power. Archaeological finds testify to the long history of settlement: in addition to the dragon mosaic, graves, bronze vessels, and oracle bones have been discovered. The Zhang surname originates from Puyang — one of the most common family names in China with over 80 million bearers worldwide. The Zhang Ancestral Temple site attracts thousands of descendants from around the world each year for ancestor worship. The surroundings offer the Jindi National Park on the Yellow River with wetlands, birdwatching, and walking paths. The Yellow River itself, China's mother river, is particularly picturesque in this region. The Puyang Museum documents the archaeological treasures of the region and the history of dragon culture.
