Dining in Tirana

Tirana is Albania's culinary capital — and the food scene is rapidly evolving. In addition to traditional Albanian cuisine, there are more and more creative restaurants combining local ingredients with modern techniques. For international standards, the prices are a dream.

Must-Try in Tirana

  • Tavë Kosi — The Albanian national dish: lamb in a casserole of yogurt, eggs, and rice, baked until golden brown. Creamy, hearty, and absolutely delicious. In traditional restaurants for 600–800 Lek (6–8€).
  • Byrek — Albania's favorite snack: puff pastry pockets with spinach (me spinaq), cheese (me djathë), minced meat (me mish), or tomatoes. Available on every street corner for 50–100 Lek. The nation's breakfast.
  • Qofte — Grilled meatballs made from beef or lamb mince, seasoned with mint and onions. Served with bread, salad, and yogurt. A plate: 400–600 Lek.
  • Fergese — Casserole of peppers, tomatoes, and cottage cheese, gratinated in the oven. The vegetarian soul of Albanian cuisine.
  • Trilece — "Three-Milk Cake" (from Ottoman tradition, related to the Latin American Tres Leches): a soaked cake made from three types of milk with caramel glaze. The country's most popular dessert.

Where to eat in Tirana?

  • Pazari i Ri (New Market): The best address for traditional cuisine at fair prices. Several restaurants around the market hall offer grill specialties and meze.
  • Blloku: From cheap street food to upscale dining — Blloku has it all. Especially good: the restaurants on Rruga Pjeter Bogdani.
  • Rruga e Kavajës: Tirana's "food mile" with byrek stalls, kebab joints, and traditional restaurants. More authentic and cheaper than Blloku.
