Kruja — City of Skanderbeg
Just 30 km north of Tirana lies Kruja, the historic stronghold of the national hero Skanderbeg. The castle sits atop a rocky ridge high above the plain and offers views to the sea on clear days. The Skanderbeg Museum (within the castle grounds, designed by Hoxha's favorite architect Pranvera Hoxha) tells the story of the Albanian resistance against the Ottomans — nationalistically exaggerated but impressively staged.
No visit to Kruja is complete without the Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër): a narrow, cobblestone alley with craft shops selling carpets, copperware, antiques, and souvenirs. One of the most authentic bazaars in the Balkans — here, haggling and production still take place. Day trip from Tirana: Furgon from 200 Lek (2€), travel time 45 min.
Durrës — The Oldest City
Durrës (ancient Dyrrachium) is only 38 km west of Tirana on the Adriatic and is Albania's oldest city (founded in 627 BC by Greek colonists). The amphitheater (2nd century AD, for 20,000 spectators) in the city center is one of the largest in the Balkans. The promenade is popular with Albanians but less touristy than the Riviera. Worth a half-day visit, especially for the amphitheater and old town. Bus connection from Tirana: hourly, 1€, 45 min.
Pellumbas Cave (Shpella e Pëllumbasit)
About 25 km southeast of Tirana lies this impressive stalactite cave (also known as "Black Cave"). An easy hike (30 min.) through a picturesque gorge leads to the entrance. The cave itself is 360 m long, with massive stalactites and an atmosphere like something out of an adventure film. Not a commercial tourist spot — bring a flashlight! Reachable by rental car or organized tour from Tirana.
💡 Tipp
Kruja can be perfectly combined as a half-day trip from Tirana. Head there in the morning (Furgon 45 min.), explore the castle and bazaar, have lunch at the bazaar, and be back in Tirana by the afternoon. The Furgons to Kruja depart from the station at the Zogu i Zi (Black Bird) roundabout.
