Aboriginal History — 65,000 Years

The Aboriginal Australians are the oldest continuously existing culture of humanity — at least 65,000 years of uninterrupted settlement, probably even longer. For comparison: The oldest European cave paintings are 40,000 years old, the pyramids 4,500 years.

Before European arrival, an estimated 750,000 to 1 million Aboriginal People lived in over 500 different nations, each with its own language, art, laws, and territory. They were not a unified culture but as diverse as the peoples of Europe — from the tropical rainforest in Queensland to the desert of the Red Centre to the temperate coasts in the south.

The Dreamtime (Tjukurpa)

At the heart of Aboriginal culture is the Dreamtime — the spiritual belief system that explains the creation of the world, the laws of nature, and the relationship between humans and the land. In the Dreamtime, powerful ancestral beings (the "creation spirits") created the land, the animals, and the people. Uluru, Kata Tjuta, the MacDonnell Ranges — all are physical manifestations of these creation stories.

The Dreamtime is not a past — it is an ever-present now that permeates the present. The Songlines are invisible paths across the continent along which the creation spirits traveled. Those who know the songs can navigate Australia without a map — a GPS system that existed 65,000 years before satellites.

Sustainable Living

Aboriginal People practiced fire management (controlled burning of underbrush), which shaped the landscape and prevented bushfires — a technique that Australia is only now rediscovering. They developed the boomerang (not only for hunting but also as a musical instrument and digging tool) and the didgeridoo (the oldest wind instrument in the world, over 40,000 years old).
