Uluru is the sacred monolith in the heart of Australia — 348 meters high, 9.4 kilometers in circumference, 600 million years old. What most people don't know: Only a third of the rock protrudes from the earth — the rest extends up to 6 kilometers deep. Uluru is not a boulder lying in the desert but the tip of an underground mountain range.

For the Anangu (the traditional Aboriginal owners), Uluru is not a "rock" but a living being full of Tjukurpa (Dreamtime stories). Every cave, every crease, and every water channel tells a story of the creation time. Since 2019, climbing has been prohibited — out of respect for its cultural significance. The Anangu ask: "We don't climb on your churches — please don't climb on our sacred site."

Experience Uluru

  • Uluru Base Walk (10.6 km, 3–4 hours): The complete circuit is the best way to experience Uluru. You see rock paintings, sacred waterholes, the Mutitjulu Waterhole, and only from up close do you grasp the scale — the rock wall towers vertically 300 meters above you.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: THE experience. The rock changes over a dozen colors in 30 minutes — from orange to rust-red to violet. The official Sunrise/Sunset Viewing Areas have parking (free with park pass). Sunrise is less crowded and often even more dramatic.
  • Field of Light: Bruce Munro's art installation — 50,000 solar-powered light flowers that illuminate the desert floor around Uluru. Visible only at night. From 45 AUD. Magical and surreal.
  • Aboriginal-guided tours: The Anangu guides explain Tjukurpa stories, show edible plants, and demonstrate traditional techniques. SEIT Tours (from 135 AUD, 4.5 hours) offer the most authentic experience. Highly recommended!

Practical Information

Uluru is located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Entrance costs 38 AUD (3-day pass, buy online). The nearest resort is the Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara — the only accommodation center, 20 km from the rock. From the campground (from 43 AUD) to the luxury hotel Sails in the Desert (from 400 AUD).

💡 Tipp

Come at sunrise instead of sunset — the colors are just as spectacular, but the crowds are significantly smaller. In winter (Jun–Aug), it can be 0–5 °C cold in the morning — bring warm layers! The Base Walk is most magical at sunrise.

Achtung

The temperatures in the Outback are extreme: In summer (Dec–Feb) over 45 °C — the Base Walk is closed from 11 a.m. if it exceeds 36 °C (heat hazard). Always carry at least 3 liters of water per person, sun protection, hat. The best travel time is May–September (daytime 20–28 °C).
