The Kimberley is Australia's last wilderness — a region three times the size of England with less than 40,000 inhabitants. Rugged gorges, horizontal waterfalls, ancient Aboriginal rock art, and an isolation unmatched in the modern world. The gateway to the Kimberley is Broome.

Broome

Broome is a tropical jewel on the Indian Ocean — famous for Cable Beach, a 22-kilometer-long white sand beach where you can ride camels at sunset (from 70 AUD/30 min). The sunset over the Indian Ocean, with camel silhouettes against the orange-red sky, is one of Australia's most iconic images.

  • Staircase to the Moon: A natural phenomenon — at full moon, the moonlight reflects on the exposed mudflats, creating the illusion of a staircase to the moon. Only on 3 nights per month (Mar–Oct), accompanied by a night market at Town Beach.
  • Gantheaume Point: Red cliffs meet turquoise sea. At low tide, 130 million-year-old dinosaur footprints are visible in the rock!
  • Willie Creek Pearl Farm: Broome was once the pearl capital of the world. Tour a working pearl farm (from 95 AUD) — learn how South Sea pearls are created.

The Kimberley — Pure Adventure

  • Horizontal Falls: Water rushes through narrow rock gaps creating "horizontal waterfalls" — up to 5 meters difference in height depending on the tides. Only accessible by boat or seaplane (from 850 AUD day trip from Broome). David Attenborough called them "one of the greatest natural wonders of the world".
  • Bungle Bungle Range (Purnululu NP): Beehive-shaped sandstone domes with orange-black stripes — like from another planet. UNESCO World Heritage. Only accessible by 4WD or scenic flight.
  • Gibb River Road: 660 km legendary outback track from Broome to Kununurra. Only drivable in the dry season (May–Oct), only with 4WD. Turn-offs to gorges like El Questro, Bell Gorge, and Tunnel Creek. The ultimate outback adventure.

💡 Tipp

The Kimberley is only accessible during the dry season (May–October) — in the rainy season (Nov–Apr), most roads are impassable, and many attractions are closed. Book Horizontal Falls and Bungle Bungle Scenic Flights in Broome — the perspective from the air is breathtaking.

Achtung

The Kimberley is extremely remote. On the Gibb River Road, there are no gas stations for hundreds of kilometers, no mobile reception, and no roadside assistance. Only drive with a full tank, reserve canister, spare tire, sufficient water (10 L per person/day), and satellite phone.
