El Born — The Trendy District
The El Born (officially: Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera) is Barcelona's trendiest old town district — a perfect mix of medieval architecture, boutiques, cocktail bars, and some of the city's best restaurants. Where fishermen and craftsmen once lived, concept stores, vintage shops, and design cafés have moved in.
Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar
The "Cathedral of the Sea" (1329–1383) is the architectural jewel of the Born — a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic. Unlike the exuberant cathedral of the Barri Gòtic, Santa Maria del Mar impresses with its simple elegance: wide aisles, slender columns, a sense of space and light. Made famous by Ildefonso Falcones' bestseller "The Cathedral of the Sea". Admission: Church free, roof tour 10€.
Museu Picasso
The Museu Picasso is housed in five medieval palaces and showcases over 4,200 works from Picasso's youth and formative years in Barcelona (1895–1904). No Guernica (that's in the Reina Sofía in Madrid), but a fascinating insight into the development of a genius: from academic drawings through blue periods to the complete deconstruction of Velázquez's Las Meninas. Admission: 12€, free on the 1st Sunday of the month and Thursdays from 5 PM.
El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria
The former Born market hall (1876) became an archaeological sensation during renovations in 2002: beneath the floor, the completely preserved streets and houses of the district from 1714 were found, destroyed by the troops of Philip V after the siege of Barcelona. Today, the excavations can be viewed under the glass roof of the market hall — an impressive symbol of Catalan memory. Admission: free.
Tapas and Bars
El Born is the best district for an evening tapas tour. The streets Passeig del Born, Carrer dels Flassaders, and Carrer de la Princesa are lined with bars and restaurants:
- Cal Pep: Legendary counter bar (since 1979) with the best seafood tapas in the city. No reservation system — queue up, stay put. Tapa: 8–18€.
- El Xampanyet: Quaint cava bar since 1929 with azulejo walls, ham hanging from the ceiling, and homemade champagne foam. Tapas 3–8€.
- Paradiso: From the outside, an inconspicuous pastrami shop — through the refrigerator door, you enter one of the world's best cocktail bars (No. 3 of the World's 50 Best Bars 2023). Cocktails: 14–17€.
💡 Tipp
El Born is most beautiful in the evening — street lamps cast warm light on the Gothic facades, bars fill up, and the terraces on Passeig del Born are perfect for a vermut before dinner.
