Catalan Identity

Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish — it is an independent Romance language, closer to French and Occitan than to Castilian. Over 10 million people in Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Andorra, and parts of southern France speak Catalan. In Barcelona, you’ll hear both: Catalan and Spanish (Castellano). Street signs, menus, and official communication are often in Catalan — don’t worry, you’ll get by with Spanish or English everywhere.

Castells — Human Towers

The Castells are a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and the most impressive example of Catalan community culture. Teams (Colles) build human towers up to 10 stories high — a tradition since the 18th century. The construction is strictly codified: The wide base (pinya) supports the middle levels (tronc), and at the very top, a child (enxaneta) climbs up and raises their hand to signal completion. The tension is immense — Castells can collapse. In Barcelona, you can see Castells at the Festa de la Mercè (September) and during the Diada (September 11).

Festivals & Holidays

  • Sant Jordi (April 23): Catalonia’s most beautiful holiday — the day of Saint George, patron saint of Catalonia. Tradition: Men give women a rose, women give men a book. The Rambla and Passeig de Gràcia transform into a sea of roses and books. Romantic, literary, and unique.
  • Festa Major de Gràcia (August): The neighborhood festival of Gràcia: Neighbors decorate their streets for weeks with homemade artworks from recycled materials. Each street has a different theme — from underwater worlds to space scenarios. Free and spectacular.
  • La Mercè (September 24): Barcelona’s largest city festival in honor of the patron saint: Castells, Correfocs (fire runs with dragons and devils), concerts, street theater, and the Piromusical (fireworks at Montjuïc). 5 days of pure celebration.
  • Revetlla de Sant Joan (June 23): The night of Saint John (Midsummer Night): Bonfires on the beach, fireworks, firecrackers, and partying until dawn. The wildest night of the year.
