Safety

General Security Situation

Brazil has a security problem that should not be sugar-coated — but also not exaggerated. The crime rate is higher than in Europe, especially in big cities. The tourist areas in Rio, São Paulo, Salvador, and beach resorts are much safer than their reputation if a few rules are followed.

Common Risks & Prevention

  • Pickpocketing & Phone Snatching: The most common danger. Phones are snatched from hands on the open street — especially in Rio (Copacabana, Centro, Lapa). NEVER use your phone openly on the street! If you want to take a photo: quickly take it out, snap the picture, and put it away immediately.
  • Beach Theft: NEVER leave valuables on the beach, not even "just for a quick swim". Only take a cheap towel and some cash. Everything else should be in the hotel safe.
  • Muggings (Assalto): Can occur in poorer neighborhoods and at night. Golden rule: If it happens, DO NOT resist. Hand over your phone and cash. Your life is worth more.
  • Fake Police Officers: Real police wear uniforms and have badge numbers. "Plainclothes officers" who want to see your passport or money on the street are scammers.

Golden Safety Rules

  1. Uber/99 instead of street taxi — always
  2. Do not use your phone openly on the street
  3. Carry little cash, keep the rest in the hotel safe
  4. Do not wear expensive watches, jewelry, or cameras openly
  5. Do not go alone into dark or isolated areas at night
  6. At the beach: only take the essentials
  7. Digitally store copies of passport and credit cards (Cloud/Email)
  8. Get travel insurance with repatriation
  9. Visit favelas only with a local guide, never alone
  10. In bars: never leave drinks unattended
