What does Budapest cost?
Budapest is 40–60% cheaper than Western Europe — especially for food, drinks, and accommodations. The currency is the Forint (HUF): 1€ ≈ 390–410 HUF (fluctuates). In many tourist venues, you can also pay with Euros, but you get poor rates — always pay in Forint.

Budget Levels
Backpacker / Budget (25–50€ per day)
Budapest is a backpacker paradise: hostels from 10€/night, Langos and street food for 2–4€, goulash soup in a self-service kitchen for 5€, beer in the pub for 1.50€, free viewpoints (Gellért Hill, Fisherman's Bastion, Danube bank), affordable baths (Rudas: 14€, Palatinus on Margaret Island: 10€). Many museums are free on the last Sunday of the month.
Mid-range (60–120€ per day)
Hotel in a good location, lunch in a traditional restaurant (Primo + Segundo: 12–18€), dinner in an upscale venue, 1–2 thermal baths (Széchenyi or Gellért), Danube cruise, ruin bars. The most comfortable way to experience Budapest — and still half the price of Vienna.
Comfort / Luxury (130–300€+ per day)
Boutique hotel or grand hotel (e.g., the historic New York Palace Café for breakfast), Michelin-starred restaurants (Onyx, Costes, Borkonyha), private bathing times in historic baths, private Danube cruise, wine tastings in the Tokaj district, and an evening at the Hungarian State Opera. Budapest can be truly luxurious — at prices that would be ridiculous in Paris.
Tipp
The biggest savings hack in Budapest: the exchange office (Váltó). NEVER exchange at the airport or in hotels — the rates are terrible. Use the exchange offices in the city center (e.g., Correct Change, Gold Change) or withdraw with your card at ATMs (Revolut/Wise cards are ideal). And: ALWAYS pay in Forint, never in Euro — choose "in local currency" for card payments!
Savings Tips
Budapest is already affordable — with these tips, it becomes even cheaper:
- Budapest Card: 24h (35€), 48h (52€), 72h (68€) — free public transport, free entry to 30+ museums, 2 free city tours, discounts on baths and restaurants. Worth it for intensive sightseeing.
- Lunch Menu (Napi menü): Many restaurants offer a daily menu (napi menü) for 1,500–3,000 HUF (4–8€): soup + main course + drink. The best value meal in the city. Signs "Napi menü" or "Ebéd menü" at the door reveal it.
- Thermal Bath Timing: Many baths offer evening rates (from 5 or 6 PM) with 20–30% discount. Rudas is most atmospheric on Friday evenings (night bathing with DJ).
- Fisherman's Bastion: Free (only the upper tower charges admission from May to October). Before 8 AM, it is almost deserted — the best photo opportunity in the city.
- Gellért Hill: The best viewpoint in the city is completely free — 360° panorama, Liberty Statue, Citadel. Perfect for sunset.
- Drinking Water: Budapest's tap water is excellent. In some thermal baths, there are drinking fountains with thermal water (mineral-rich).
- Public Transport: The 24h ticket (2,500 HUF / 6.40€) for metro, bus, tram, and suburban trains is a bargain. Tram 2 along the Danube (Pest side) offers the most beautiful free view of the city.
- Szimpla Kert on Sunday: On Sundays, a farmers' market with brunch takes place in the famous ruin bar — fresh bread, jam, sausage, cheese at fair prices. The most authentic experience of the ruin bar scene.
